The Greatest Bridge Between East and West

1893 — 1952  ·  YSS Founded 1917  ·  SRF Founded 1920

"I was sent to the West not to make Hindus of Christians, or Christians of Hindus — but to show that the Eternal Religion underlies ALL religions. God is ONE. Truth is ONE. The paths are many."

— Paramhansa Yogananda

The Life

A Journey From
Gorakhpur to the World

Born Mukunda Lal Ghosh in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, he became the first great Indian master to live permanently in the West — and to demonstrate that the scientific era was not the enemy of God-realization, but a new language for the same eternal truth.

1893

Born in Gorakhpur

Mukunda Lal Ghosh is born on January 5 in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. From childhood, deep states of samadhi and visions of saints mark him as extraordinary.

1910

Finds His Guru

He meets Swami Sri Yukteswar Giri in Serampore — the guru foretold to him in a vision. A relationship that would define the rest of his life.

1917

Founds Yogoda Satsanga Society

Established in Dihika, Bengal — the first institution to formally teach Kriya Yoga and science-compatible meditation to all castes, creeds, and nations. YSS India remains headquartered in Dakshineswar.

1920

Sails for America

Invited to speak at the International Congress of Religious Liberals in Boston. He arrives to a standing ovation — and stays for thirty years. Self-Realization Fellowship founded the same year.

1946

Autobiography of a Yogi Published

Considered one of the most transformative spiritual books of the 20th century. Still in print, translated into 45+ languages. Steve Jobs requested it as the one book on his iPad at death.

1952

Mahasamadhi

He delivers his final speech at a banquet for India's ambassador, recites a poem about India and America, and enters mahasamadhi — a conscious exit from the body. His body showed no signs of decay for 20 days.

The Teaching

What He Brought
To the World

His teaching was not a new religion. It was a scientific method for all religions — a practical path for direct experience of God.

01  —  Core Practice

Kriya Yoga

An ancient technique energizing the spine and brain, withdrawing the life force from the senses and redirecting it toward the source. "A half-minute of Kriya equals one year of natural spiritual unfoldment."

02  —  Science

Religion & Science United

He demonstrated that meditation was not superstition but the most advanced science of consciousness — that every spiritual experience had a physiological and energetic counterpart.

03  —  Unity

Harmony of Religions

He taught from the Bhagavad Gita and the Bible simultaneously — showing that Jesus Christ, Krishna, and all realized masters were teaching the same one truth through different outer forms.

04  —  Healing

Energization Exercises

32 yogic exercises combining will power and prana — designed to recharge every body part with cosmic energy. Still practiced by YSS/SRF devotees worldwide as a complete daily health system.

05  —  Philosophy

Cosmic Consciousness

The ultimate destination: the direct experience that one's own soul and God are one. Not belief — direct experience. Not later — now. Not by grace alone, but by scientific technique.

06  —  Society

World Brotherhood Colonies

He envisioned communities where East meets West, where practical work and meditation are one life. Self-sufficient spiritual communities as the model for world peace.

"The power of unfulfilled desires is the root of all man's slavery."
— Paramhansa Yogananda · Autobiography of a Yogi

The Lineage

The Line of
Kriya Yoga Masters

Yogananda was the fourth in a line of masters who carried this technique into the modern world. Each passed the torch directly — guru to disciple.

Yogoda Satsanga Society of India (YSS)

Founded 1917. Headquarters: Yogoda Math, Dakshineswar, West Bengal. The Indian arm of Paramhansa Yogananda's work — carrying on Kriya Yoga teachings, meditation lessons by correspondence, and ashrams across India.

Yogananda himself said: "YSS is my India. SRF is my West. They are one body." Today YSS has 200+ meditation centres across India, free correspondence lessons for all, and the full written legacy of Yogananda in Hindi and English.

Why Dr. Namita Shares This

Healing the Whole
Human Being

Yogananda's core insight was that the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual are not separate. Disease arises when any layer is disconnected from the whole. Healing — true healing — works on all four.

This is the meeting point between the CAN BISWAROOP healing protocols and the YSS teachings: both ask us to stop outsourcing our health and our consciousness to external authorities — and to recognize that the healing power is already within us, waiting to be accessed.

"You do not have a soul. You ARE a soul. You have a body."
— Paramhansa Yogananda
